Arthur Melo is facing up to THREE MONTHS out injured after picking up a thigh issue in training, with the struggling loanee having undergone successful surgery on SaturdayIt is a bitter blow for the Brazilian who tore a quad muscle while running in training on Monday.

The operation, at a London hospital, went well on Saturday however and he is targeting a comeback early in the New Year.

Arthur had joined Liverpool on loan from Juventus on deadline day as cover after injuries suffered by Jordan Henderson and Thiago. The 26-year old was short on match fitness though after his pre-season was disrupted at Juventus.

He had put in extra work during the international break doing double training sessions and volunteering to play for the club’s U21s against Leicester City and Rochdale.

He was determined to impress upon Jurgen Klopp that he could make a telling contribution to his new club and had earned plaudits for his efforts and development from coaching staff.

He had hoped to be in the squad for this week’s Champions League tie with Rangers and Sunday’s vital clash at Arsenal, the club who tried to sign him last January.

Arthur was understood to be upbeat last night though with a positive prognosis post surgery and is focusing already on the work ahead so he can make an impact in the crucial second stage of the season.
