Your face is connected to the club”- Tottenham defender makes Harry Kane and Lionel Messi comparison

By

Clement Lenglet has said that Harry Kane is to Tottenham Hotspur what Lionel Messi is to Barcelona. The Barca loanee joined Spurs on a season-long loan deal this summer.

He played for the Camp Nou outfit for a few seasons while Messi was still there. The Argentine legend left the club last year and joined Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) on a free transfer.

Messi spent close to 21 years at the Catalan club and is arguably the face of that team despite not even being on their books. Kind of like how Daniel Radcliffe is for the Horry Potter motion picture series?

Pop references aside, Lenglet believes Kane carries that same importance for Spurs. Speaking in an interview (h/t Daily Mail), the former Sevilla centre-back said:

“When you stay a long time in the same place and you achieve so many good things with the club it means you become a part of this club. Your face is connected to the club. For me, Messi is always a Barca player.”

Kane has been on Tottenham’s books for the entirety of his professional career. However, the 29-year-old has been linked with a move to Bayern Munich recently, who lost Robert Lewandowski to Barcelona this summer.

“For Harry it’s the same. It’s difficult to think of Harry in another country or playing for another team. Tottenham is a big club, Harry is a big player and Harry is a big part of Tottenham.”Kane is a living legend.

He is close to becoming the club’s all-time leading goal-scorer, overtaking Jimmy Greaves’ 266-goal record. One thing he hasn’t done here at Tottenham is win a trophy.

It’s not without a lack of trying from his end, though. He has scored goals at a consistent rate. He is currently the Premier League’s third all-time leading goalscorer.

His contract expires in the summer of 2024 (Transfermarkt). Hopefully, manager Antonio Conte has assembled a Spurs team capable of matching Harry’s standards and handing the Englishman the first trophy of his career. We kind of owe him one at this point.
